Is a printed update in the works? I like print books. Already have it, but I'd probably pick it up again.
On the other hand, Bonds of Magic is probably a great sort of book for a pdf -- print out the particular character you want to use right before the game. What sort of changes did you make? |

There are no plans for a print update (it didn't sell well enough to merit a reprint, even with the 3.5 changes), though I believe we're going to include a text file of the changes made so print users can buy & download the upgrade ZIP and put the changes in their print copy.
As for what changes, it's just the simple stuff like changing skill points, renaming skills, moving spells to their 3.5 levels, adjusting spells/feats/items for the new rules, etc. No major reworking of the characters is being done except for the rangers, which experienced major rules changes. :P --

Ah well. I hate to hear it didn't sell well. I liked it a lot, at least on a read-through. I have to admit I haven't used it in-game yet because I've not been running D&D in a fairly long while. But there are several characters I think would be really useful -- particularly the orc spell casters and the like.
It doesn't sound like the update will be that big a deal, really, but I might pick it up in pdf anyway, like I said, it strikes me as the sort of book that would work well in pdf form. Is the update out, or is it yet-to-come? Edit: Duh -- the link you provided said it comes out in April. |

What sort of playtesting goes into a book like that? Do you use the characters as PCs? As NPCs? Do you use the feats/spells/items separately from the character each was designed for?

Dang, too bad it didn't sell well. I bought a copy. Still need to get Skreyn's II. The extra goodies were great, and I did use a few characters from it at various points. But, there's so much free stuff out there that in retrospect I can see why it might not have done great.

Yes, Skreyn's Register = Bonds of Magic.
And it's not that it didn't sell, it just didn't fly off the shelves and batter you in the face with an immediate demand for a reprint. :) As far as playtesting goes, it was mainly a matter of looking at the spells, feats, and items to see if they were unbalanced. The characters themselves didn't really need to be playtested (proofread, maybe, but not playtested). They're all built with base classes (and all single-classed, in fact), and if we actually needed to playtest every character built with the base classes we might as well just throw the core books out the window right now. :P --

Well that's better, then. Do you plan to do any similar books? Fighters or Rogues or something?

Re: Bonds of Magic to be updated to 3.5 rules | ||

We had planned to do a ftr/mnk/rog book but the sales of Bonds weren't high enough that we thought it would do well on its own. Then we thought about doing a tie-in to Cry Havoc, but right around then I was coming out of Deadline Hell (from working on AOA, oddly enough) and we chose to just drop the plans for it entirely, since I wanted some time off for freelance.
However, my upcoming, always-vaguely-in-the-future book from Reaper is going to have plenty of ftr, rog, and mnk PCs/NPCs in it. --

Quote:That would have been cool. Especially the monks. Has anyone put out a book of pregenerated monks? I think that'd be great. Detail three monasteries, LG, LN, LE, some of the significant NPCs in each -- grandmaster, healer, whatever, do generic "typical initiate" stats for each monastery's 1st or 2nd level mooks, make up one or two feats for each monastery as "order secret forms" or something, and add a few connections among the monasteries, maybe some very general suggestions on connections to a city or rural area where the monasteries are located. I think that'd make a pretty good pdf product, though I don't know if it would have enough appeal to fly in print. I'd buy it, but I doubt that would justify a print run. ;) |

I have thought of a similar product for "hordes," for example, a goblin horde book, with stats on a raiding band, a big squad, a small army, an entire tribe, etc., with tactics, leaders, etc.
Same concept, really. --

More-or-less.
I can see the Monk version having a little bit of player-appeal in that it could provide a few options for PC monasteries. On the other hand I think that the horde books you're talking about would probably have greater DM appeal because horde creatures are so popular as enemies. I'm pretty sure I'd buy something like that. |
